These past few months as an 18 year old apprentice, I’ve been introduced to new ideas and experiences that have changed the way I see everything digital. Whether it being my early encounters with the fundamentals of PPC or scratching the surface of how SEO is used, working in a digital marketing agency has proven to be a challenge but one that offers you a fountain of knowledge into how businesses utilise modern marketing methods through new technologies to optimise their results.
Before I had a foot in the door of the digital marketing world I had still previously seen and used aspects of it through the analytics of my channel on YouTube. Every teenager is now growing up watching their favourite online content creators on YouTube, and many are inspired to take that step into creating their own video as I did.

Through the years I’ve uploaded many videos with varying degrees of success and have looked back on the ones which gained popularity. I looked at what I did and how I could repeat that to gain similar success and, ultimately, more exposure. Little was I aware this was a basic version of one of the tasks I’m now doing as part of a digital marketing agency.
During my first month here I’ve had the opportunity to pick at the brains of experts who have been doing this for countless years. Mainly I have been learning the basics of PPC and admittedly on first glance there is a lot of information to take in at once, but it’s actually interesting. Unlike complicated, advanced mathematics and tedious science lessons that students like myself rarely understand and take in, learning about Google AdWords shows you how businesses look to grab the attention of people just like me and you through the use of the advertisements.
It’s fascinating to now discover the amount of times I’ve been enticed by different businesses online marketing methods, whether it being my favourite food branch offering me deals through E-mails or Netflix telling me about the new shows they have coming after having unsubscribed. On the other side of things I’ve had the briefest of introductions to how SEO works, and from what I’ve understood so far, it is the process of correcting and improving little features over a long period of time in an attempt to ascend to the first page of Google’s organic results. Like I mentioned before, I’ve only had a slight taste of what’s to offer with SEO.
The advice I would give to anyone looking into joining a digital marketing agency as an apprentice would be to be willing to learn a lot of new and interesting ideas. When you start you get terms and references thrown at you that you won’t understand, however as long as you have a supportive team around you, they will be willing to help you understand everything, no matter how stupid a question it may seem. Once you’ve learnt these fundamentals you can begin to apply them in other areas such as I now have with gaining a better understanding of how my YouTube channel works and better ways to maximise my views and exposure.
